Burda Style Magazine outfit: Pants and a Top

I made the top first (Burda 09/2019) and then the pants (Burda 02/2019) to go with it.

Primero cosí el pulover (Burda 09/2019) y después los pantalones (Burda 02/2019) para que hicieran un conjunto.


(I changed my shoes because I wasn't convinced I liked the boots with this outfit...the struggles haha)

(Me cambié los zapatos pensando que no sabía si las botas me gustaban con este conjunto...jaja)

Both fabrics were from stash, the knit is a rayon and the pants are stretch cotton (Emma one Sock from many years ago)


Las telas las tenía en la colección, un tejido con tencel muy ligerito y un algodón con lycra (de (Emma one Sock de años atrás)

The top:

I fell in love with the sleeves of this design, including the seam of the dropped shoulder.


Me enamoré de las mangas incluyendo la costura de boca manga.

I did not encounter any sewing issues. Note that there is a zipper in the back to allow for the fitted neckline look.

No fue difícil de coser. Fíjense que tiene un zipper/cremallera atrás para que el cuello quede bien pegadito.





The pants:

I liked the details of the waistband which makes these pants a little different. A lot of tops are being tucked in right now so I thought I could really show off the waistband.


El adorno de la cintura me llamó la atención especialmente que ahora está de moda usar los pulovers/blusas por dentro.

The challenge for me was doing pattern matching since my fabric is a small plaid. I'm happy with my efforts.


La parte más difícil fue al cortarlo y coserlo tratar de coordinar los cuadritos. Estoy contenta como quedó.

I am consciously making outfits when sewing, not that these two pieces couldn't work with many others in my existing wardrobe, but at least I have one set pairing.

Estoy tratando de no dejar piezas huérfanas en mi closet y por eso me esforcé en hacer el conjunto. Por supuesto tengo otras cosas que puedo coordinar con estos pantalones y pulover.

Burda Style Magazine 8/2014 Style #128 Coat try on

Here are the pictures I took last spring (that's why the sandals in case you were wondering) after I finished my coat.

Aquí están las fotos tomadas la primavera pasada (por eso llevo sandalias) después de haber terminado mi abrigo.

I'm very happy with the finished product.

Estoy muy contenta con el producto final.

Burda Style Magazine 8/2014 #128 Coat

Last spring I finished my second tailored coat (here are the posts that followed my journey into my first coat making which was part of a sew-along many years ago). The fit on this coat was a lot more relaxed than the first coat I made so the tailoring was softer. I did it with fusible interfacing and some machine "pad stitching". As usual I depend on the book t Tailoring - The classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jackewhenever I tackle any type of tailoring.


La primavera pasada terminé otro abrigo. El primero que hice fue parte de un "sew along" que me ayudó muchísimo (here pueden ver el proceso en el link "here") Esta vez los detalles de sastre no fueron tan intensivos como en el abrigo anterior, usé entretelas fijadas con calor en lugar de con puntos a mano. Como siempre usé como referencia el libro Tailoring - The classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacke

Shell without lining

Burda instructions have you cut the undercollar in one piece. I had a feeling that it was better to cut in two pieces on the bias and Tany (read her wonderful blog) answered my question on Instagram and confirmed that it allows for better roll of the cloth.


Las instrucciones the Burda te guían a cortar la pieza  del cuello en una pieza. En mi experiencia es mejor cortar el cuello al bies y en dos pedazos para que encaje mejor. Le pregunté a Tany (lean su blog, es maravillloso) por su opinión y me dijo que ella siempre transforma los cuellos de Burda a dos piezas.




There's a dart under the collar that adds shape and which I have seen in other designs. This is the kind of detail that I love about Burda patterns.


Hay una pinza debajo del cuello. Este detalle ayuda con el entalle y es una de las razones por las que me encantan los patrones de Burda.

The fabrics are a wool coating, silk lining and cotton flannel. I lightly quilted the flannel to the silk to add extra warmth.


Las telas son tela de abrigo de lana, seda para el forro y franela de algodón. Yo con puntadas alrededor de ciertas flores del estampado uní el forro a la franela para agregar insulación al abrigo.

The inseam pockets are topstitiched to the front.

Los bolsillos llevan pespuntes al frente del abrigo.

The back pleat had me scratching my head for a bit but it look different than I had made before.

La construcción de la abertura de atrás me confundió un poco porque es distinta a lo que he hecho anteriormente.

I followed the instructions from Paukshte Sewing Workshop (link is to part two on finishing the hem). I'm loving the results! Highly recommend these videos.


Seguí las instrucciones de Paukshte Sewing Workshop (Parte II que cubre como hacer los dobladillos). ¡Me encanta como quedó! Les recomiendo estos videos.

To keep the clean lines of this design I chose to keep the closures as shown in the magazine. I used large beautiful snaps.


Para mantener el estilo simple de este diseño agregué broches de presión como recomienda Burda. Estos broches bellos los encontré en New York.

Burda Style Magazine 2/2013 Knit top No 127

I pulled out this issue to make the wide leg pants (already made but need to be photographed!) and I remembered that I had made the dress version of this top so I decided to make the top.

Cuando saqué esta revista para hacer los pantalones de pata ancha (ya están hechos pero necesito tomar fotos) me acordé que había hecho el vestido y decidí que necesitaba un nuevo pulover.

The flower print is from Elliott Berman Textiles, the solid was in my stash (a rayon knit). The shirring on the sleeve in the front and back makes this pattern a little different and it gives a nice fit to the bodice. Note that the sleeves are really long, I cut off about 3 inches.

Este bello estampado viene de Elliott Berman Textiles, la otra estaba también en mi colección (es una tela de punto de rayon). El recogido en las mangas, en el frente y atrás es un detalle que distingue este patrón y entalla bien el corpiño. Las mangas son bien largas, les corté como 3 pulgadas.

This one is a keeper.

Me encanta este diseño y estoy segura que lo volveré a confecionar.

Paco Peralta Wide Leg Pants and Burda Style Top 4/2014

I wanted to make this pants(bcnuniquepatterns, a design by Paco Peralta) during the summer but as it happens summer ended before I could. I then decided that they would make nice pants for transitional weather. I bought from Fabric.com a very lightweight cotton twill. It is not a very good quality fabric, a peril of buying online.

Quería hacer estos pantalones (un diseño de Paco Peralta, bcnuniquepatterns) este pasado verano pero se acabó el calor antes de poder. Por eso decidí que me vendrían bien para el otoño. Compré la tela, un twill de algodón bien ligero, en Fabric.com. No es una calidad super buena, lo que pueded pasar comprando sin poder ver.

This design is very generous with ease. I made a Medium and a Small would have worked for me (W30, hip 38 1/2), especially because my fabric while lightweight didn't have a lot of drape to keep the fullness as designed. Center front is flat, the elastic and casing stop at the pleat.

Este diseño es bien amplio. Yo me hice un Mediano y la verdad que el Pequeño hubiera sido mejor (mi cintura: 30 pulgadas, cadera 38 1/2 pulgadas), especialmente pues la tela aunque ligera no tiene mucha caída. El elástico llega hasta los pliegues del costado por delante dejando el centro (por la barriga) plano.

I am looking forward to using a fabric with a lot more drape for the next version. I took the above pictures on a different day so you could see the waistline on the pants.



En el futuro planeo usar una tela con más caída y hacer una version para el verano. Las fotos encima las tomé otro día para mostrarles bien el diseño.

I was looking through my collection of Burdas and I found this style that I have always wanted to make. I used a poly crepe from my stash.

El otro día estaba mirando mis viejas Burdas y encontré este estilo que siempre quise hacer. Usé un crepé de polyester que ya tenía.

I changed the neckline by adding an inch to bring it in. Sometimes ballet style necklines don't fit my narrow shoulders well. I like how it turned out. I added an opening to the back thinking I might not be able to get it over my head but I can...oh well.

Cambié el escote agregando una pulgada para que no quedara tan abierto pues a veces los modelos con ese tipo de escote no me quedan bien. Agregué una abertura a la espalda pensando que quizás no me cabía por la cabeza pero me pude haber evitado el trabajo pues no tengo que desabrochar el botón para ponermela.

The picture of this top in the magazine shows that the top is cropped. I added an inch to the length at but I always do but even without that extra inch it would not have been cropped on me.

En la revista el modelo se vé corto (llegando a la cintura). Yo agregué una pulgada al largo pero es algo que siempre hago.  Sin esa pulgada de extra aún no me quedaría tan corto.

I really like how this outfit turned out!


¡Estoy muy contenta con mi nuevo conjunto!

Burda 2/2014 No 117 top

Today I was able to trace this pattern that has been calling my name for a while. I plan to use a beautiful navy blue wool crepe in my stash.

Hoy pude calcar este patrón de Burda, hace tiempo que quería hacerlo. Planeo usar un crepe de lana precioso que tengo en mi colección.

Since the neckline is so low and it is such a loose fitting style, I thought it would be a nice layering piece for the coming fall/winter season.

Como el escote es bien bajo y el estilo es bien suelto pienso que me va a servir para usarlo encima de un pulover de mangas largas para que me mantenga calientita en los meses fríos que vienen.

Theater sewing for Aida

This spring our musical, Aida, required a ridiculous number of costumes. We were lucky that for the one number "My strongest suit" where there is a runway show we had many wonderful costumes that we rented from a local business. The majority of these were altered by me and with the help of a friend and parent volunteer we came up with headpieces for those costumes that didn't come with them.

El show musical Aida que presentaron en la escuela donde soy responsable por el vestuario, requería muchísimos vestidos. Tuvimos la suerte de que la señora a quien le alquilamos tenía una gran colección que pudimos usar para la escena donde cantan "My strongest suit"que incluye una pasarela. Una amiga, que también se presta a ayudar, y yo modificamos el vestuario y creamos sombreros para completar muchos de los vestidos

 For the main lead in this number I wanted something slinky that stood out amongst her handmaidens.

I ended up with a gold crepe backed satin from Joann's and I morphed two patterns, McCalls 4444 and Vogue 2396.  From the McCalls I used the bodice and I lengthed the pencil skirt from the Vogue.

Para la estudiante que cantaba el papel principal no teníamos vestido. Yo quería algo bien sexy que mostrara su bonita figura y que la hiciera resaltar al lado de las otras muchachas. Paré comprando una tela de satin de polyester y combiné dos patrones. Hasta la cintura era McCalls 4444 y de la cintura abajo alergué la falda de Vogue 2396.

I was thrilled with the fit and how well it looked on stage.

Me encantó como se veía en escena.

For the wedding scene we needed a hat and veil. Here is the picture of the broadway costume

Para la escena de la boda me hacía falta un sombrero tipo faraón con un velo. Aquí ven fotos del show de Broadway.

The local business owner that we rent from had told us she had made this veil/hat and at the last minute told us she couldn't find it. We needed a pharaoh hat with an attached veil . The closest I could come up with in a short period of time was this Burda Style pattern (7175)

La señora a quien le alquilamos nos dijo que ella había hecho el sombrero y velo como el del show, pero a última hora nos dejó plantados y tuve que rápidamente inventarme algo. Encontré el patrón de Burda 7175 y lo usé para el sombrero.

I used the hat pattern, covered in muslin and added the trim and my wedding veil. Seeing my veil on stage after 20+ years of being in storage was a thrill, and the combination was perfect for the scene. The veil was beaded by hand by my mom and me and it shimmered beautifully on stage.

La base del sombrero la cubrí con muselina y le agregué la cinta adornada.  Usé mi velo de novias al cuál  mi mamá y yo le habíamos agregado lentejuelas y cristalitos. Me emocionó ver mi velo en escena después de más de 20 años.

I had taken a mummy-like costume, embellished it with beads through the chest and added the same trim as in the hat to the neckline and wrists and we used it for the wedding dress.

Usé un vestido que parecía de momia para el vestido de bodas. Le cosí piedrecitas y usé la misma cinta del sombrero alrededor del cuello y las muñecas.

The wedding scene turned out great!

I had the pleasure to work with a beautiful and talented student for 4 years. I was abled to transform her into many roles, including Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) and Belle (Beauty and the Beast). I will miss her.

Tuve el placer de trabajar con una estudiante preciosa y talentosa por 4 años. Pude transformarla en muchos papeles, incluyendo a Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) and Belle (Beauty and the Beast). La voy a extrañar.
