New Look 6525 Knit dress

I made this pattern back in December 2018 and for no particular reason never wore it until recently.

Worn with RTW cardigan

I did not have any issues with it, made my usual alterations. It is fitted in the upper body but of course it swings out as you can see. Check how much you wanted it to swing out and consider using a very drapey fabric. I used a heftier single knit because I wanted it to be on the warm side for winter wear. While I like my dress it does flare out quite a bit.

The gathered skirt took time and patience but it was not difficult to attached to the body.

A stripey skirt for the summer

I chose this pattern to highlight the stripes in this pretty fabric that came home with me from Austin.

Simplicity 2413 uses the same pattern for the front and back, cut on the fold which I wanted to limit piecing with my fabric.

It has pockets and a side zipper. I cut the waistband on the bias for interest.

The sizing is a little off, make sure you flat pattern measure. I did and made it a little too lose at the waist, oh well it's very comfortable to wear.

The hardest part of the construction? matching stripes at the side seams. I'm pretty happy with the result.

Simplicity 2413

This fabric called me as soon as I saw it.  It's part of my Austin fabric haul. It is a navy cotton background with bias strips of different prints. The stripes run along the width of the fabric, it looks like a chevron above but it's just the way I unfolded the fabric.

I wanted a skirt with a little bit of flare and I did not want to piece the fabric . To the rescue comes Simplicity 2413. Both front and back are cut on the fold and the zipper is in the pocket, yay!

I just finished adding to the waist in the pattern since for some reason I bought the smaller group of sizes, and the fabric is all ready to be cut.

Theatre Sewing

Beauty and the Beast was a success. We had 6 shows and 5 were sold out. It was by far the most exhausting of all the shows I have been involved in, but on opening night when everything came together the students performance, the music, the tech and the costumes...what a thrill!

So what did I make? I made Belle's blue dress, Mrs Potts apron and the wolves' hoods (12 of them!).

McCalls 6793 was used for the neckline and originally for the sleeves.  The sleeves ended were so binding I replaced them with new sleeves made the pattern from the Dorothy dress (which I made for the same student) and I narrowed the shoulders and lowered the armhole for a good fit. I do not recommend this pattern except for the neckline which was pretty and exactly what I was looking for.

The skirt which I attached to the top, was recycled from a dress in the theatre closet. I shortened it and added the lace ruffle.

The corset (Simplicity 5582) worked great. I added the zipper in the back, trim to the neckline and created a "faux" lace up. I also added flannel as an interlining to give it body. I did exhaggerate the point in the front so that it would show better on stage.

The apron is my own, just a rectangle with ties and lots of trim :-)

Mrs Potts apron was made from Simplicity 5961(it seems to be OOP) . I added a lining and an interlining of flannel to give it body. The pink is purchased bias binding. The fabric is from Joann's home section. The hat is from my colonial costume (see link below) with an added pink bow trim.

For the wolves hoods I used Simplicity 2853. I looked at many pictures of wolves before drawing the ears for the pattern. I used felt for the hood (we needed a cheap fabric) and I splurged on the small amount of white fur for the inner part.

 Here are some backstage shots.

 Isn't this a fantastic piece?

What did I enhance? Belle's yellow ballgown was very pale so I made a collar and added a sash to the skirt of a very bright embroidered organza.

For the neckline I used Burda 2479 as a base with some modifications to fit the dress I was working with. I love how it came out, it framed the student's face beautifully and the back fluttered when she waltzed. Because of these modifications we didn't have to pay for this dress.

We had a tea before the last mattinee

With my husband's help ( he created a perfect little platform that held the feathers straight up and in place) we added the feathers to the hat that Babette (the feather duster) wore. I also enhanced her dress (which was rented) with more feather boas.

Another mom and I also repaired, ironed and enhanced most every costume we rented. The enchanted objects were in poor shape and needed lots of love; we had 10 teacups ( we wired the rims for better shape), about 15 silver ware pieces (straps were redone and fitted to the students) salt and pepper (body pieces were falling apart, so we took them apart and fixed them).  I replaced zippers, fixed seams, took in costumes, let out costumes...you get the picture.

For this show I also took on finding costume sources and dealing with the lady that we ended up using because she had great costumes for reasonable prices. She also liked what I made and bought from us Babette's hat, Mrs Potts apron and hat and the wolves' hoods! We kept Belle's dress, too much work went into that dress, I would never get a fair prize plus we should be able to use it in another production.

Here are some shots of the show

Babette's hat looked wonderful with the enhanced dress

Do you recognize the dress on the student second from right? Yes my colonial gown has now been on stage.

I hope you enjoyed learning about my experience, I sure had fun!

Beauty and the Beast

I know that I have been giving you lots of teasers lately and no completed projects, although I have finished them. I promise next post will have proof! So yet again I'm showing you what is occupying all of my free time.

It is once again time for the spring musical at my son's high school where I am heavily involved with wardrobe.

I am at the moment working on Belle's blue dress. My inspiration, this beautiful Broadway musical version

Here is a peak of mine

Este es el mío

I'm actually using the skirt from a Laura Ashley dress that had been donated to the school, because it was the perfect royal blue color and a beautiful cotton damask. To the skirt I am attaching a white blouse I'm making and then on top is the corset which I modified to close in the back with a zipper and I will create a mock laced up closing in the front.

For the blouse I'm using McCalls 6793, without the peplum since I'm attaching it to the skirt. The skirt is so heavy I will be adding a waist stay so that it doesn't pull down on the blouse.

Here is the corset Simplicity 5582

I've had one fitting and ended up having to redo the blouse because I cut it too small for the actress. Saturday I get to look at all the costumes on the students and the director will approve or ask for possible changes. Also fittings will be refined. I have another mom that helps me :-)

The amount of work is always unbelievable, but on opening night once the curtains open the satisfaction I feel makes me forget all the hours of work and it is  so worth it!

A dress for me!

Today I got to wear a new dress! A super simple to make, can you say the serger is a wonderful quick and efficient friend =)

I have always loved the simplicity (no pun intended!) of this Simplicity 2054 a Cinthia Rowley pattern. It is a t-shirt lengthened to an A line dress. I could have lots of these in my closet...easy to wear, easy to accesorize specially during those mornings when there isn't a lot of time to think about what to wear.

I wore it with a cardigan today and no belt,  I think I like it even more with the belt. I also like the sleeve length since we don't all have Mrs Obamas's shapely arms.

I'm so excited to sew! What next! I'll let you know when I decide. If you have suggestions for any must have garment/pattern let me know! I have been out of the loop of the greatest and most popular.

I'll be back soon!

A quick hello

Have I told you how much I miss blogging? Well, I do! Life has become busier for me lately, I won't bore you with details but soon, meaning end of spring term, I will have more time.

I have a knit dress cut waiting to be sewn

I used a knit from my PR New York trip, which I saw Karen getting at Kashi's and I had to have it also =). I would like to get it done to wear to work on Tues, we will see if I can manage it.

Happy spring to all! Keep on sewing and I will too!

An FO and a Fail

So I finished the hat, and it looks great, just what my son wanted.

However I messed up on the sizing and it doesn't fit!!

I did not take into account that quilting the fabric would reduce the size of the opening, so sadly I went out again today to get the supplies to make another one.

Oh well, it might come in handy at some point.

Progress on the hat

This past week besides being extremely busy, I had a back pain flare up. Quilting is not good for my back so quilting the velvet for the wizards hat was delayed until today, since I'm happy to report the pain is almost gone.

I have used Simplicity 5512 many many times but this is the first time for the wizards hat. Since my son is now over 6 ft I had to modify the hat for size and also he did not want the scrunched tip so I made it shorter.

The picture is terrible but it shows the quilting. For the brim I spaced and cut the velvet before quilting the fabric but I made it work. The brim is quilted with cotton batting, which I had on hand and no backing. The crown has the velvet, batting and a lining.

I have to start painting my bedroom today so I hope that tonight I will be able to continue on the hat.

Here is the inspiration picture again.
