It has been almost a year since I published a post! Life gets busy and so on. You can always catch me on Instagram (@cubanitacose) a much quicker way to share what I'm up to.

Hace casi un año que escribí mi último post! Las cosas de la vida y las responsabilidades interfieren. Siempre pueden ver en qué estoy siguiendome en Instagram (@cubanitacose) es mucho más fácil para mí mostrar en qué estoy allí.



This year the spring musical was Hello Dolly! and while it's not one of my favorite shows it was fun to put together costumes (gloves, hats, parasols!) The company we rent from had a wonderful assortment of costumes so the cast looked great. My main job was to fit and repair and put the outfits together. I also got to make a few headpieces. I almost forgot! I made 18 suffragette sashes. I researched the colors that represented the organization in the US in the period of the show.

Este año montamos el espectáculo musical Hello Dolly! y aunque no es uno de mis favoritos el vestuario fue muy divertido (¡somebreros, guantes y parasoles!). La compañia a quién le alquilamos estaba muy bien surtida de todo lo que necesitabamos. Mi trabajo principal fue modificar, arreglar, reparar cremalleras aunque también tuve la oportunidad de hacer varios adornos de cabeza. Oh! también hice unas bandas de sufragistas, para las cuáles usé telas que representaban los colores de la época en los Estados Unidos.

Above are some of our lovely students. The dress on the right was too short so I added the navy accents and I added the flowers to a hat from our collection.

Arriba están un grupo de las alumnas. El vestido a la derecha era muy corto así que le agregué los detalles en azul marino y a un sombrero de nuestra colección le agregué flores.

The biggest challenge custom wise in this musical was a quick change on stage for the number I don't wanna show off". The dress starts looking like what you see in the picture below but with petals wrapping the skirt, which is the first layer to come off (sorry no pictures!)


Lo más difícil de ésta producción fue el vestido que cambiaba en escena para el número I don't wanna show off. El vestido como se vé en la foto empezó con una capa de pétalos que fué lo primero que se quitó en escena.

Then behind an umbrella that comes down and then quickly up the dress becomes what you see below.


Después detrás de una sombrilla y con mucha rapidéz el vestido se convierte en lo que ven en la foto abajo.

I started with this dress that I made last spring for Aida.

Todo empezó con el vestido dorado que hice la primavera pasada para Aida.

I cut it short and embellished the bodice with a geometric woven trim that I would use to cover seam allowances since the skirt was going to be tacked up to change the look of the bodice (as you see on the top picture). The purple skirt was added for this look and the petals were attached to it. Behind the umbrella the actress pulls down the skirt that is covering the bodice for the final look. All this was accomplished with magnets and the help of one of the theatre students who is planning to study costume design. The first layer that comes off (the string of petals) was also attached to the purple skirt with magnets.

Le corté la salla y lo adorné con una cinta bordada para cubrir las costuras ya que volví la salla al revéz para cubrir el corpiño (como se vé en la primera foto). La salla morada se le agregó y  se le pegó la tira de pétalos. Detrás de la sombrilla la actríz baja la salla dorada para la última transformación. Todo lo hice con imánes y la ayuda de una de las alumnas que planea estudiar diseño de vestuario para teatro.

I added the purple fabric also at the seams to give the skirt a 1920's look and more importantly to make it a swingy skirt that the actress could dance in.


Agregué la tela morada a las costuras del vestido para darle el "look" de los vestidos de la época y con más importancia, para que la actríz pudiera bailar sin problemas.



After getting our rentals we needed one more dress for the Janet character. I started with a $3.00 dress that one of the moms found at Salvation Army.

Después que recibimos los vestidos de alquiler nos hacía falta un vestido más para el personaje de Janet. Empecé con un vestido que costó $3.00 en el Salvation Army.

The color is off in these pictures you can see the true color below. I cut it at the hip for to add a swingy skirt and give it that 1920s silhoutte.

El color se vé mejor en las fotos abajo. Corté el vestido en la cadera y le agregué una salla con estilo de los años 20.

Tah dah!!!

I added a skirt with godets. I embroidered some details in orange to tie it to the embroidery in the bodice. The fabrics were purchased at Joann's.

Agregué detalles bordados en anaranjado para que fuera con el bordado del corpiño.

The scarf was needed for this number Accident waiting to happen

También hice la bufanda que hacía falta para el número Accident waiting to happen.

The character Adolpho needed a vest, a shirt and jabot, and  a cape.

El personaje de Adolpho necesitaba un chaleco,  camisa con chorrera y una capa.

I made the jabot following instructions I found online.

Hice la chorrera siguiendo instrucciones que encontré en la red.

The pattern for the vest was a McCalls pirate pattern and the shirt I bought at Costco. The cape I borrowed from my son, one that I made for him years ago.

El chaleco es un patrón de McCall's, para piratas. La camisa la compré en Costco. La capa la cogí prestada de mi hijo (una que yo le hice hace unos años)

Theater sewing for Aida

This spring our musical, Aida, required a ridiculous number of costumes. We were lucky that for the one number "My strongest suit" where there is a runway show we had many wonderful costumes that we rented from a local business. The majority of these were altered by me and with the help of a friend and parent volunteer we came up with headpieces for those costumes that didn't come with them.

El show musical Aida que presentaron en la escuela donde soy responsable por el vestuario, requería muchísimos vestidos. Tuvimos la suerte de que la señora a quien le alquilamos tenía una gran colección que pudimos usar para la escena donde cantan "My strongest suit"que incluye una pasarela. Una amiga, que también se presta a ayudar, y yo modificamos el vestuario y creamos sombreros para completar muchos de los vestidos

 For the main lead in this number I wanted something slinky that stood out amongst her handmaidens.

I ended up with a gold crepe backed satin from Joann's and I morphed two patterns, McCalls 4444 and Vogue 2396.  From the McCalls I used the bodice and I lengthed the pencil skirt from the Vogue.

Para la estudiante que cantaba el papel principal no teníamos vestido. Yo quería algo bien sexy que mostrara su bonita figura y que la hiciera resaltar al lado de las otras muchachas. Paré comprando una tela de satin de polyester y combiné dos patrones. Hasta la cintura era McCalls 4444 y de la cintura abajo alergué la falda de Vogue 2396.

I was thrilled with the fit and how well it looked on stage.

Me encantó como se veía en escena.

For the wedding scene we needed a hat and veil. Here is the picture of the broadway costume

Para la escena de la boda me hacía falta un sombrero tipo faraón con un velo. Aquí ven fotos del show de Broadway.

The local business owner that we rent from had told us she had made this veil/hat and at the last minute told us she couldn't find it. We needed a pharaoh hat with an attached veil . The closest I could come up with in a short period of time was this Burda Style pattern (7175)

La señora a quien le alquilamos nos dijo que ella había hecho el sombrero y velo como el del show, pero a última hora nos dejó plantados y tuve que rápidamente inventarme algo. Encontré el patrón de Burda 7175 y lo usé para el sombrero.

I used the hat pattern, covered in muslin and added the trim and my wedding veil. Seeing my veil on stage after 20+ years of being in storage was a thrill, and the combination was perfect for the scene. The veil was beaded by hand by my mom and me and it shimmered beautifully on stage.

La base del sombrero la cubrí con muselina y le agregué la cinta adornada.  Usé mi velo de novias al cuál  mi mamá y yo le habíamos agregado lentejuelas y cristalitos. Me emocionó ver mi velo en escena después de más de 20 años.

I had taken a mummy-like costume, embellished it with beads through the chest and added the same trim as in the hat to the neckline and wrists and we used it for the wedding dress.

Usé un vestido que parecía de momia para el vestido de bodas. Le cosí piedrecitas y usé la misma cinta del sombrero alrededor del cuello y las muñecas.

The wedding scene turned out great!

I had the pleasure to work with a beautiful and talented student for 4 years. I was abled to transform her into many roles, including Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) and Belle (Beauty and the Beast). I will miss her.

Tuve el placer de trabajar con una estudiante preciosa y talentosa por 4 años. Pude transformarla en muchos papeles, incluyendo a Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) and Belle (Beauty and the Beast). La voy a extrañar.

 

Theatre Sewing

Beauty and the Beast was a success. We had 6 shows and 5 were sold out. It was by far the most exhausting of all the shows I have been involved in, but on opening night when everything came together the students performance, the music, the tech and the costumes...what a thrill!

La Bella y la Bestia fue un éxito! De las 6 funciones 5 se vendieron completamente. De todos los expectáculos de que he participado ¡éste por poco acaba conmigo! Pero una vez que se abren las cortinas de la noche de estreno, todo se olvida cuando veo lo bien que todo ha quedado.



 So what did I make? I made Belle's blue dress, Mrs Potts apron and the wolves' hoods (12 of them!).

¿Qué yo creé? El vestido azul de Belle, el delantal y sombrero de Mrs Potts y doce capuchas de lobos.

McCalls 6793 was used for the neckline and originally for the sleeves.  The sleeves ended were so binding I replaced them with new sleeves made the pattern from the Dorothy dress (which I made for the same student) and I narrowed the shoulders and lowered the armhole for a good fit. I do not recommend this pattern except for the neckline which was pretty and exactly what I was looking for.

The skirt which I attached to the top, was recycled from a dress in the theatre closet. I shortened it and added the lace ruffle.

The corset (Simplicity 5582) worked great. I added the zipper in the back, trim to the neckline and created a "faux" lace up. I also added flannel as an interlining to give it body. I did exhaggerate the point in the front so that it would show better on stage.

The apron is my own, just a rectangle with ties and lots of trim :-)


Usé McCalls 6793 para la blusa la cuál pegué a la salla que era parte de un vestido que teníamos ya en el closet. La salla la hice más corta y le agregué el encaje. El patrón de la blusa no le recomiendo excepto para el cuello pues las mangas quedaron muy apretadas y el hombro se caía. Paré cortando el hombro y quité las mangas. Usé el patrón de Dorothy y corté nuevas mangas (ya yo había hecho ese vestido para la misma estudiante el año pasado).

El corset (Simplicity 5582) fue perfecto. Le agregué el zipper atrás, el encaje en el cuello y inventé el frente para que pareciera de verdad.

El delantal me lo inventé, un rectangulo con muchos adornos.

Mrs Potts apron was made from Simplicity 5961(it seems to be OOP) . I added a lining and an interlining of flannel to give it body. The pink is purchased bias binding. The fabric is from Joann's home section. The hat is from my colonial costume (see link below) with an added pink bow trim.


El delantal de Mrs Potts lo hice de Simplicity 5961. Agregué forro y franela para darle más cuerpo. Lo terminé con cinta al bies que compré. El sombrero ya estaba hecho, parte de mi disfraz colonial, sólo le agregué el lazo.

 For the wolves hoods I used Simplicity 2853. I looked at many pictures of wolves before drawing the ears for the pattern. I used felt for the hood (we needed a cheap fabric) and I splurged on the small amount of white fur for the inner part.



 Para las capuchas usé Simplicity 2853, miré muchas fotos de lobos antes de dibujar las orejas para el patrón. Usé felpa para la capucha (necesitabamos tela económica) y agregué piel blanca en el centro.

What did I enhance? Belle's yellow ballgown was very pale so I made a collar and added a sash to the skirt of a very bright embroidered organza.


¿Qué mejoré? El vestido amarillo de Belle era muy pálido así que le hice un cuello y le agregué a la salla un adorno de organza bordada.

 For the neckline I used Burda 2479 as a base with some modifications to fit the dress I was working with. I love how it came out, it framed the student's face beautifully and the back fluttered when she waltzed. Because of these modifications we didn't have to pay for this dress.


Para el cuello usé Burda 2479 como base y lo modifiqué para que le quedara bien al vestido. Me encantó como le quedaba el color a la cara de la estudiante y cuando bailaba el cuello atrás se movía de lo más lindo. A la señora le gustó tanto que no nos cobró el alquiler del vestido.

We had a tea before the last mattinee

With my husband's help ( he created a perfect little platform that held the feathers straight up and in place) we added the feathers to the hat that Babette (the feather duster) wore. I also enhanced her dress (which was rented) with more feather boas.


Con la ayuda de mi esposo le agregué plumas a un sombrero para Babette (el plumero). Al vestido que alquilamos también le agregué más plumas.

Another mom and I also repaired, ironed and enhanced most every costume we rented. The enchanted objects were in poor shape and needed lots of love; we had 10 teacups ( we wired the rims for better shape), about 15 silver ware pieces (straps were redone and fitted to the students) salt and pepper (body pieces were falling apart, so we took them apart and fixed them).  I replaced zippers, fixed seams, took in costumes, let out costumes...you get the picture.

La cantidad de trabajo que se llevó esta producción fue increíble. Con la ayuda de otra mamá reparamos todo tipo de disfráz. Teníamos 10 tazas a las cuales les agregamos alambre para darle mejor forma, las piezas de cubiertos tenían unas tiras para aguantarlos al cuerpo que tuvieron que rehacerse, etc. No sé cuantos zippers paré cambiando, ajusté, agrandé...bueno ya se imaginan.



For this show I also took on finding costume sources and dealing with the lady that we ended up using because she had great costumes for reasonable prices. She also liked what I made and bought from us Babette's hat, Mrs Potts apron and hat and the wolves' hoods! We kept Belle's dress, too much work went into that dress, I would never get a fair prize plus we should be able to use it in another production.

Además para esta producción tuve la responsabilidad primero de encontrar el vestuario y después ser la que me entendía con la señora que nos alquiló. A ella le gustó tanto lo que hice que compró el sombrero de Babette, el delantal y sombrero de Mrs Potts y las capuchas de los lobos.
